How to Register and Vote at a One Stop Absentee Voting Site:

     A North Carolina resident who is qualified to vote but who misses the 25-day deadline for voter registration may register and vote at a One Stop Site during the One Stop Absentee Voting period.  To use this process, a citizen must

  1. Go to a One Stop Voting Site in the county of residence during the One Stop Absentee Voting period

  2. Fill out a voter registration application

  3. Provide proof of residency by showing the elections official an appropriate form of identification with the citizen’s current name and current address

*The new registrant may vote ONLY at a One Stop Absentee Voting Site in the county of registration during the One Stop Absentee Voting period and not on Election Day.

Acceptable forms of identification include:

  • A North Carolina driver’s license with current address

  • A utility bill with name and current address:

    • A telephone or mobile phone bill

    • An electric or gas bill

    • A cable television bill

    • A water or sewage bill

  • A document with name and current address from a local, state, or U.S. government agency, such as:

    • A passport

    • A government-issued photo ID

    • U.S. military ID

    • A license to hunt, fish, own a gun, etc.

    • A property or other tax bill

    • Automotive or vehicle registration

    • Certified documentation of naturalization

    • A public housing or Social Service Agency document

    • A check, invoice, or letter from a government agency

    • A birth certificate

  • A student photo ID along with a document from the school showing the student’s name and current address

  • A paycheck or paycheck stub from an employer or a W-2 statement

  • A bank statement or bank-issued credit card statement

- If you cannot supply an acceptable form of identification for Proof-of-Residence, your registration application cannot be fully processed until the required information is provided.

- Registered voters may also update their address and change vital information in an existing registration record at the One Stop Site, but they are not allowed to change their party affiliation during the One Stop Voting period that precedes a partisan primary.

March 19, 2012 - May 1, 2012

No ballots will be mailed after May 1, 2012


*Sick & disabled only May 2 - 7, 2012
in person pick-up by request of near relative

Ballot requests may be submitted by the voter, voter’s near relative (spouse, brother, sister, parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, mother-in-law, father-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, stepparent, stepchild), or a verifiable legal guardian.  Power of Attorney does NOT have this authority.

They must be handwritten and submitted via one of the following methods:

Include the following in your request:

  1. Full name
  2. Physical address
  3. Address where you want the ballot mailed
  4. Party affiliation (if primary election)
  5. Date of birth
  6. Telephone number
  7. Signature of the voter or voter's near relative or verifiable legal guardian along with their address
An Absentee Request Form may also be used. Call the Board of Elections at 704-986-3647 to have one sent to you.
*Voting the Ballot:
 
  • Remember to use a black ball point pen
  • Complete the application on the back of the envelope
  • Make sure you sign your application along with one witness. Don't forget to have the witness include his/her address. Your ballot CANNOT be counted if you do not complete this step.
*Returning the Ballot:
  Ballots must be returned to the Board of Elections by 5:00 PM on the day before Election Day OR be postmarked by Election Day and received by mail no later than 5:00 PM on the third day after Election Day.

  Your ballot must be transmitted by 12:01 am on the day of the election, (May 8, 2012), (voter time) and must be received by the county the last business day before (May 14, 2012) the canvass (May 15, 2012).
